Tournaments

2020 RLTC TOURNAMENTS
Thanks to all our tournament participants this year!  Even with Covid, we had lots of fun matches and good times with tennis friends.  One of the best parts about tournaments is meeting people and finding new tennis partners! There was a lot of that this year, and it was great to see so many participants back out on the court afterwards.  We look forward to next year and hope everyone had a great tournament season.

Thank you to our tournament director, Phil English, and his committee, and the members who came out to cheer six feet apart.

Women's Singles
Picture2020 Ladies Singles Champion - Jennifer Munn (R) defeated Sandra Ng
A fantastic women's singles final to close our tournament season! The players battled for nearly three hours with Jennifer Munn taking the trophy for a second year.  Congratulations to Jennifer and finalist Sandra Ng. It was very close one: 7-6, 7-5!

Thoughout the match, the women showed great sportsmanship and grit. They were evenly matched, each with excellent shots and very different styles.  The final wasn't short on drama, either. We had an injury timeout when Sandra rolled her ankle and tournament participant Anne Meehan (a doctor) rushed out to assist.

Congratulations to Paula Dunn who prevailed in our women's singles consolation vs. Natalie Montgomery.

Thanks to umpire John Bouza (who also sat in the chair for a John McEnroe vs. Jimmy Connors exhibition match in Ottawa 30 years ago and officiated for Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg) and Dave Baker, who ran our Facebook Live.  You can catch the full women's final match on our Facebook page!

A Successful Junior Tourney
Congratulations to our 2020 Junior tournament winners! This year's event went to Michael Vivone and finalist Tyler Malhotra.  Our consolation winners were Sebastian St. John and finalist Bobby McGarry.  Bravo to all the participants!

What a great opportunity for these kids to learn a sport, progress, get some fitness, develop new skills and make new friends! It's especially important this year.  The ice cream at the end was a perfect finale!  Thanks to Coach Z and Ronan for all their enthusiasm and hard work. They're making tennis fun, accessible and competitive! They seemed to be having fun at the tournament, too!

And thanks to all the tennis parents supporting your kids and helping make it a fantastic family day at the club!

Exciting Men's Doubles
We were treated to a great match with some outstanding points in our men's doubles final! Someone in the crowd (okay, it was our manager Chris' dad Scott Hannant), said he was cheering for Alfredsson! It was a safe bet!  It was an exciting match with Daniel and Shawn taking the first set 6-4. Henric and Sacha battled back to take the second 6-4, then won the third 6-1.  There was some unbelievable tennis on display. And lots of movement on the court. As Sacha said afterwards, some people say they don't get a workout with doubles. That means you're not doing it the right way, he pointed out!  If you missed our Facebook Live, go to our page to watch the match (it's in two parts).
Thanks to our umpire Mitch Bouchard (who met Daniel and Shawn in the semis with his partner Sacha Imbert). And congrats to our other semifinals team Stephen Bowler and Cameron Montgomery.  Also thanks to Tournament Director Phil English, member and tech whiz Dave Baker who took our champion photos and ran our Facebook Live and our manager Chris Hannant. Chris and Henric were spotted out drying the courts with towels before the match.  It truly takes a team!

Great start to our tournament season!
We had a tournament ceremony on the lawn in one big circle, six feet apart from one another. Different, but still nice! We thank everyone for helping make it happen. Also, thank you to tournament director Phil English who was tonight's umpire, Chris Hannant our hardworking manager, and Paul Bernier who selects and delivers our wine. It takes a team! It was a great start to our tournament season, with everyone having fun and staying apart (together) and keeping their bubbles (except for maybe the dogs).

What thrilling women's tennis! Savina Dzhatov and Jenna Jenkins took it to a super tiebreaker in the third set, winning the women's doubles title! We are so honoured to have these girls play and train at our club. Great things to come! Congratulations to them and finalists Maureen Boyd and Sue Mersereau.

General information:
-Participation is free! But we are asking players to bring their own can of new balls for each match.
Initial games will be played in the evening at 5, 6 or 7 PM.  If you are unable to play at 5 PM, please advise us when you register, and we will schedule you at 6 or 7 PM.
-The outcome of the first match for each tournament will determine whether teams or players are streamed into the A or B (consolation) group.
-Each player or team is guaranteed to play at least 2 matches.
-If there are less than 5 teams registered, a round-robin format will be used.
Match format:
-Except for the semi-finals and finals, all matches will be a pro set of first to eight games, winning by two games. If the score reaches 7-7, a regular tiebreak is played, the winner being the first to reach 7 points, winning by 2 points.
-Both A and B semi-final and final matches will be two out of three sets. If tied at one set each, the third set will be a “super tiebreak”, that is, the winner is the first to reach 10 points, winning by 2 points.
 Rules:
-Players are reminded that they are responsible for calls on their side of the net, and the opposing player/team must accept their decision. If there is any doubt, normal etiquette is to give the opponent the benefit of the doubt.  Players should avoid replaying a point, though this is always an option if both sides agree.
-If a game is stopped due to failing light, the score will be carried over to the next day.
-We will do our best to arrange for an umpire for the final matches.
-These events are intended for full members. Club pros and social members are not eligible to participate.

Availability:
Players should ensure that they are available for the full opening weekend of the tournament.  Small adjustments in match times can be considered but only if both players/teams agree.  Matches must be completed so as not to delay the next round. Otherwise, the player/team asking for the delay will have to forfeit the game. Players are asked to contact their opponents directly if they wish to make a change and then advise the clubhouse staff in order to reserve a court.
